DIPG: April 2018 – February 2020
Forever Age: 21
I am Kristen Moore and I am 20 years old. I unfortunately learned that I had DIPG by having a MRI because I was experiencing a lot of uncomfortable symptoms while going to school. I was in nursing school full time while also working at a local hospital on the weekends. I, at first, wrote off the headaches, unsteadiness and double vision as stress due to my busy life. But after falling in the shower one night, I knew something else was going on. So I made the appointment to get checked out. About a week later, on April 30th, 2018, I was diagnosed with a grade four diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma.
After learning all about my new found friend (I named him sucal) I immediately began a clincal trial along with radiation. Which caused me to celebrate my first year anniversary in the hospital waiting room all day. After spending all of my summer laying on a table with a funny helmet, I got to come home and begin chemotherapy. My chemotherapy was oral so I did get to complete it in the comfort of my home. However, about 5 rounds and 4 scans later, I came to the realization that it was not working in the way that my team of doctors hoped it would. So I made the tough decision to end all treatment around Christmas 2018.
However, I have not let that slow me down. I currently spend my days using my crafting talents making different homemade projects for my family. I could not be happier getting to stay home and be comfortable. I also decided that I would not let this disease get me down…. I am not dying from cancer, I am living with it.
